What's A Pool Genie?

Do you know what a pool genie is? My copy editor doesn't think so. Please give your answer. Or I may be reduced to a long-winded generic definition.

Is that the tube thingy that floats in the pool & cleans all the gunk so you don't have to bend over and get it all with a net?

I was gonna say what Kimberly said, but we Filipinos don't have swimming pools so I'd just be guessing wildly...

You'll tell us, yes?

May I have that in a sentence please? (Country of Origin is likely to be Los Angeles ... so never mind that.) Any alternate pronunciations?

Yes, Madley I will definitely tell you. But first I want to get a quorum of answers to see if it's as known to me as it is to everyone else. :}

Okay, the sentence for Stephanie:

"Dad bought a modest house on a swanky street that wrapped around a golf course. The swanky houses backed up onto putting greens. Their front yards were fenced in and private, and when you walked past, you could hear the faint whisper of POOL GENIES and clinking highballs and success."

I do. But not until I was 30 and spent a summer working in a Scuba Store in Florida, with a pool (and a Pool Genie). I was ignorant until then.

That is a very well written sentence! I can see why you don't want to change it. I would just change "Genies" to "filters", I know "filters" does not paint the same mental image as the randomly self-automated genies.

Even if the "average" person knows what a pool genie is, remember that half of all people are below average.

Isn't the pool genie the guy that goes by the name Jake, and stands by the pool without a shirt on, six-pack abs glistening in the hot sun while skimming the pool with that long-handled net thingy?
I'm just saying.....

Hi Susan,
For some reason I'm not able to leave a comment on your blog (perhaps THEY have found out about me? Hee hee) so I'll offer my opinion on Pool Genies here.
My first thought was, "Hopefully it differs vastly from a diaper genie." Then, my twisted mind went on to picture little fat men floating around in innertubes, each wearing a fez and pointy-toed slippers.
Okay, so applying myself to the task of actually supposing what a Pool Genie really is, I would suspect that it's what we used to call a "pool sweep" which was the thing that floated around on top of the pool, connected by a white cord to something or other, and it cleaned the pool of small bits of detritis.
Am I close? Carol Merrill, do I win a prize? The braying donkey behind Door Number Three?
Can't wait to read your book!

A long plastic hose attaches to teh pool genie that crawls along the bottom of the pool to clean it automatically - and if that's right, the reader would probably need to be in demographic that at least knows people that make around $100K a year or so that can afford a pool - so I'm tending to side with your copy editor (fro your sake, though).
